When Jenn Horowitz, 14, started fencing at the age of 9, she had no idea that she would become the best female fencer of the Y14 age division in the nation.

It began as a hobby; now it is a lifestyle.

“I started fencing because when I was 9, my 7-year-old brother Charlie’s favorite hobby became hitting me, “ Jones said, laughing. “Being able to wield a weapon gave me strength and power.”

This empowering feeling drove Horowitz to further pursue her fencing career.

“After fencing for about a year, I went to my first tournament. I placed second there and continued to rack up more trophies,” she said. “I realized that I was really good and wanted to treat fencing as more than just a hobby.”

Horowitz gradually increased her practice schedule to 24 hours a week, enabling her to become the national champion of her age group, which she says is “the greatest feeling in the world.”

“Fencing is the biggest, most important part of my life,” Horowitz said, “and something that will remain so for the rest of my life.”
