Dressed in head-to-toe blue, Mary Evans is briskly walking along the CSULB campus with her co-worker Susan Taus. They are both on their lunch break, or as they like to call it, their “wellness” break.

Both women are nurses at theĀ  Veteran Administration Hospital (VA.) Evans and Taus go on their “wellness” break every day in an attempt to increase their heart rates by 75 percent. Evans has been working as a nurse at the VA since 1993. Not only has she worked as a nurse there but also as a ward corp, time keeper, and pay role clerk. She owes a lot to the VA.

After getting married and having kids, Evans decided to go back to school at CSULB. The VA helped her by paying for her tuition through a program called Upward Mobility. Before starting a family, she studied clothing and textiles. Now she is getting ready to retire. Some might think that retirement means to stop working completely, but Evans plans on being a part time nurse at the VA.

Who knows? Maybe her “wellness” breaks will keep her around the VA for 17 more years to come.
